Facebook Security Boosted by Safego Privacy App
With Facebook security making waves in the Web world, Antivirus company BitDefender has just released an application to bolster security on the popular social networking site.
Called Safego, the application adds a layer of protection to Facebook by scanning the user’s wall, inbox, comments, and news feeds for any malicious links and compromised shared content such as pictures or videos. It also checks privacy levels and information that can be viewed by everyone, and notifies the account holder when public, accessible personal information puts their privacy at risk .
Catalin Cosoi, head of the BitDefender’s Online Threats Lab, detailed the importance of the new security measure in an Oct. 26 press release. “It’s clear that a large number of people don’t understand how much personal information they’re sharing with the world,” she said. "The BitDefender safego app makes it easy to identify what’s shared and make the necessary changes.”
The Safego launch comes amidst concerns surrounding privacy on Facebook and Myspace, both of which were recently found to be distributing user content to outside advertisers and Net tracking firms .
Safego is available as a free download on Facebook now. BitDefender plans to expand it to other social networking sites in the future.
