A new malware scam is circulating around the Web offering a free download of LimeWire, a recently disabled file-sharing service.
Reported on the Threat Blog of the security firm ESET, the scam reads “Get the New LimeWire Today” followed by a rundown of the service’s benefits, including “Millions of music & movies,” and “Lightning fast downloads.”
Once an extremely popular peer-to-peer service for sharing music and movies, LimeWire was ordered to be taken down on Oct. 26 by a U.S. Federal Court judge due to claims of copyright infringement.
The LimeWire Internet scam is an example of hackers’ affinity for capitalizing on current trends in popular culture , such as spam centering on celebrities , holidays, or soon-to-be-released movies .
